    Welcome Shooting Stars and families!

    My name is Robin Guenther.  As many of you know, Ms. Freund retired this summer.  I feel privileged and excited to continue growing the STEAM program at WMSS.

    Our STEAM Lab will still offer students in grades K-6 many opportunities to become immersed in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and design challenges, Art, music, and Math (STEAM).  In addition, STEAM classes will further develop the 21st century skills of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking/problem solving.

     

    Overall Learning Objectives:

    • Ask questions, make observations and gather information about a problem
    • Design, plan, create, test and improve ideas
    • Expand creativity, imagination and artisitc abilities
    • Cultivate interpersonal and collaborative skills

    WHY STEAM?

    • US Department of Education (https://www.ed.gov/stem) stated:

    "In an ever-changing, increasingly complex world, it's more important than ever that our nation's youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. These are the kinds of skills that students develop in science, technology, engineering, and math—disciplines collectively known as STEM. If we want a nation where our future leaders, neighbors, and workers have the ability to understand and solve some of the complex challenges of today and tomorrow, and to meet the demands of the dynamic and evolving workforce, building students' skills, content knowledge, and fluency in STEM fields is essential..." 

    • Jobs in STEM fields are growing 
    • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that, during the period 2010-2020, employment in Science and ENgineering occupations will grow by 18.7% (https://www.nsf.gov/nsb/sei/edTool/data/workforce-03.html)
    • Art belongs in STEM because creativity fuels innovation

    WMSS STEAM:

    1. Students will have a set rotation schedule for activity.  The activity classes, in alphabetical order, include art, media, music, physical education and STEAM.
    2. Each class will visit the STEAM Lab once a week.  The day will be based on the rotation schedule and will not be the same day each week.
    3. Whether your child will be on campus, or e-learning, the year will start off with activities that focus on a Growth Mindset.  This will lay the foundation for future activities, whereby students are introduced to STEAM challenges that are based on real world problems and learn how to use the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to work towards viable solutions.
    4. Each grade level school supply list included items that students will need bring to, and use, in both Art and STEAM class. E-learner will need to have these items as well.
    5. Due to our current safety protocols, many of the materials that we would normally use and share in class will not be available. Hence the reason for the STEAM supply bag.
    6. There are direct links to my Web Page and Google Classroom on each student's Focus homepage. I will mainly use Google Classroom to share lessons, assignments, and other STEAM-related information.
    7. For e-learners, we will use Zoom to meet in our virtual classroom.  The Zoom link may be found on the STEAM Google Classroom page.

    Girls in Aviation Day

    Important Note:  With the safety and well-being of students being our number one priority, some enrichment programs such as Mission to Mars and Lego/Robotics, will not be available at the start of our school year.
